Fanwood

Experience a laid-back, family-friendly lifestyle.

Welcome to Fanwood

In the fascinating New Jersey City of Fanwood, a small suburban town in Union County, residents promote and radiate a true sense of community. This town is known for being an excellent place to raise your kids and family, and the overall aesthetic of the homes and downtown area offers a charming, old-fashion vibe that you’ll adore.

Fanwood is known for being a small, close-knit town neatly compacted between other friendly cities such as Scotch Plain, Westfield, and Plainfield. With few warming boutiques, eateries, parks, and a highly-rated school system, residents enjoy the town for all that it offers. Due to its location near the center of Union County, the city's residents live comfortably in a quiet neighborhood. During the spring and summer months, the area is mostly sunny and warm.

The tiny 1.34 square-mile town, perfect for those who would prefer a personal community, has an array of large multi-room homes, both vintage, new, and currently under construction.

People and Lifestyle

Fanwood is a welcoming city perfect for those seeking to live in a calm environment. Many of the homes are designed to comfortably fit large families and are in areas where traveling by foot is a reasonable means of transportation.

Residents tend to be families with children who wish to be near an excellent school system. The area is also an excellent place for retirees who are seeking to be somewhere secluded.

Dining, Shopping & Entertainment

Most homes in this town are of short walking distance to the eateries and shopping areas. If the city doesn’t offer it, residents take short 10-minute drives over to local neighborhoods to find what they’re looking for.

Start your weekend with your favorite type of bagels and snacks at Fanwood Bagels. Dine out and have some freshly caught sushi at Ginger Sushi. Bringing home fish is also possible by ordering at the local fish market, Sheelen’s Fish Company. If seafood isn’t your thing and you’re feeling something cheesy, visit the Houdini Pizza Laboratory. Other local favorites include Mara’s Cafe & Bakery, Nick's Pizza & Deli, and Fabio’s Bistro.

Things to Do

The residents of Fanwood love being outdoors! Most of the popular events and venues take place under the sun and result in thousands of attendees.

The town’s most popular park is La Grande Park. This park is filled with trees and great to walk around, offering basketball courts and a playground for kids. The Fanwood Nature Center is a small outdoor spot that offers a brisk walk through the woods.

The annual Fanwood Summer Fan Jam is a beloved summer favorite in this town. The event hosts a plethora of culturally-diverse food trucks, a classic car show, and live music and entertainment. Another annual event, Fanny Wood Day, takes place in September. This event is fun for the whole family as it too has food vendors and live music while also offering a trackless train for kids, a petting zoo, pony rides, and numerous other rides. There’s also the Fanwood 5K annual run. Each year it's themed differently—one year, every participant playfully wore superhero masks and capes.

Schools

Fanwood has schooling systems in place to help children and teenagers in all grades. These schools are:

  • Howard B. Brunner Elementary School, grades PK-4
  • Park Middle School, grades 5-8
  • Scotch Plains Fanwood High School, grades 9-12
